PCS Lease Within CONUS 

PCS stands for "permanent change of station" and means an active military member is assigned to a new station. This can mean a lot of logistical changes for your life, including the question of what to do with your vehicle. The good news is that you'll get to hold onto your car if you're remaining in CONUS, or the Continental United States. It's important to note that canceling a loan or lease early can have costly termination fees, so it's typically best to find a way to transport your new car. Because leases have mileage limitations, you may want to ship your vehicle, rather than drive, depending on the distance to your new station.  

PCS Lease OCONUS  

Circumstances change slightly when you're reassigned OCONUS, or Outside the Continental United States. Thanks to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), service members experiencing a PCS or those deployed for over 180 days have the option of terminating their car lease, as long as it was entered into while on active duty. This typically applies for moves from CONUS to OCONUS or OCONUS to another OCONUS location.  

New and Used Car Loans  

Whether you're moving CONUS or OCONUS, the rules for vehicle loans typically remain the same. Unlike leases, loan terminations do not fall under the SCRA, though you still have protections against repossessions as well as interest rate limits. If you have a pre-owned vehicle loan, you will be expected to keep up with payments, even after a PCS. Selling to a Hall dealership can be a good alternative if your reassignment will take you overseas.
