Hall | MileOne Autogroup EV Glossary

At Hall | MileOne Autogroup, we know that our cars are like our kids; we're supposed to love all of them equally. That said, we can't help but be proud of the range of terrific options in the electric vehicle (EV) segment. You'll find a number of choices at our dealerships and a seemingly equal number of new terms to familiarize yourself with.

Charging Station

You're probably used to trips to the pump, but what if you could "top off" before leaving home? A vehicle like the Hyundai IONIQ 5 replaces the pump with a plug. Most manufacturers have incorporated locator features into their app ecosystems, so it's always easy to find an EV charging station near me.

EV

While any vehicle using electric motors is technically electrified, when we talk about EVs, we're typically talking about a model like the Chevy Bolt EUV that is exclusively propelled by an electric motor.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle

A hybrid electric vehicle, usually just called a "hybrid," combines a gas engine with a battery pack and electric motors for propulsion. These vehicles, like the Toyota Prius, recharge via the engine and the vehicle's regenerative braking.

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 charging can use an ordinary 120-volt outlet, typically adding about five miles of range per hour of charge.

Level 2 Charging

A 240-volt Level 2 charger can be professionally installed in your home - many OEMs have recommended vendors for that purpose - and make up the bulk of public charging stations. They can fully charge a vehicle overnight.

Level 3 Fast Charging

A Level 3, or DC, Fast Charger is found at public charging stations. Using them, most EVs can reach an 80% charge in about half an hour.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

The Honda CR-V Plug-in Hybrid, also known as PHEV, adds a larger lithium-ion battery to the traditional hybrid powertrain. This lets you plug into a Level 1 or Level 2 charger or supplement the battery's charge through regenerative braking, the same as a traditional hybrid.

Regenerative Braking

Nearly every electrified vehicle uses regenerative braking that briefly runs the electric motor backward to slow the car, generate electricity, and replenish the battery, extending your vehicle's range.

You may not remember all of these terms, but whether you need a refresher, financing, EV maintenance, or any other help getting the most from your vehicle, we hope you'll remember to visit your nearest Hall | MileOne Autogroup dealership.
