Car Insurance 101

Whether you're interested in a new automobile or one of our quality Hall used cars, car insurance is a must. The exact requirements vary, but 49 out of 50 states require some form of coverage. Given the strong presence that Hall | MileOne Autogroup has in Virginia and North Carolina, we're particularly well suited to discuss these states' specific criteria.

Why Do I Need Car Insurance?

The reason for requiring auto insurance is simple. While collision coverage isn't mandated, liability coverage is. So if your vehicle is involved in an accident, insurance functions as a "financial safety net" that helps pay for things like injury and property damage, including to other vehicles and their occupants in the event that you're at fault. If your policy includes collision coverage and you choose a Hall body shop for repairs, we'll take a load off your shoulders by interfacing directly with your insurance provider.

What are the Car Insurance Requirements in Virginia?

Virginia is an "at-fault" state, meaning that the driver who caused the accident is liable for damages. Also, Virginia requires drivers to carry minimum liability insurance of $50,000 for bodily injury per person, $100,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. The policy must also include uninsured / underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage in the same amounts.

What are the Car Insurance Requirements in North Carolina?

The car insurance requirements in North Carolina are virtually identical to those of Virginia. The only difference is that North Carolina drivers must have at least $50,000 of property damage liability insurance. Otherwise, North Carolina is an at-fault state, and UM/UIM coverage is the same.

What Other Protective Measures are Available?

When you buy a car from us, a Baltimore, MD car dealer will summarize other available protective measures. One of the most common is GAP Insurance. If your car is totaled, GAP covers the difference between your car's value and your loan balance. Two more popular plans are Roadside Assistance and Rental Reimbursement. We can also discuss a Vehicle Protection Plan that augments your car's warranty; while it's not accident-related, the added peace of mind is worth having.
