The automobiles of today are better engineered than those of decades past, and car recalls have become a rarity. However, they do occur from time to time - and if one does, rest assured your nearest Hall service center will take care of everything. Hall | MileOne Autogroup is answering some frequently asked car recall questions to help you better understand what the process entails.
What is a Recall?
A recall is issued when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a certain component(s) poses a safety risk or doesn't meet federal safety standards. Most recalls are due to issues with car parts and systems such as braking, airbags, electrical, or vehicle software. On the other hand, things such as exterior paint are rarely the subject of a recall, unless the issue is extremely serious.
How Will I be Notified?
Notification of recall is sent by mail. In order for the notice to reach you, make sure your registration address is current.
Are There Other Ways to Check?
You can visit or contact a Hall dealership for more information. You can also visit the NHTSA website and enter either your license plate or your car's 17-digit VIN. There's also a SaferCar mobile app that's free to download.
Wait. Where's My Car's VIN?
It's often etched into one of the car's windows and located on a tag on the driver's side door jamb. Your owner's manual will show you other places to look.
What's the Next Step After Notification?
The recall will detail the nature of the problem and whether your auto is safe to drive. It's rare that a recall will involve something so dangerous that driving your car to a dealership could pose a threat, but if your recall is one of those rare instances, heed it.
How Will I Know When to Bring My Car In?
The recall notice will have instructions. If you haven't received a notice but your VIN lookup confirms your vehicle is included in the recall, we encourage you to call ahead; the replacement parts or software updates may not be available yet, and we don't want to take up too much of your time.
What if My Repair Will Take a While?
For longer repairs, we can make provisions for a loaner car or rental.
Is There a Cost For Recall Repairs?
Federal law mandates that recall repairs are free of charge for vehicles purchased within the last 10 years. So if you're concerned about cost, breathe easy - and don't delay getting the repairs done!
